What to record during a multi-sig ceremony

Months after a ceremony, teams argue about who held which share and whether the air-gapped machine was wiped. Contemporaneous notes settle those arguments.

Minimum useful record

List every participant and role, the threshold configuration in plain language, which physical devices performed which signatures, the script or runbook version followed, start and end times, and where sealed backups or evidence bags were stored. Note anomalies — a delayed participant, a restarted script step — without editorializing.

What not to capture

Do not photograph seed material or write partial mnemonics “for clarity.” The ceremony record identifies process and custody of devices; it should not become a second copy of secrets.
